Impact of inertia on active matter

We will explore the properties of inertial active particles influenced simultaneously by both Brownian motion and active noise. Our approach presents a direct method for obtaining exact expressions for all moments of the dynamical variables of free particles across any dimension. We validate our analytical results through numerical simulations and use them to investigate intriguing dynamic crossovers. By providing illustrative examples, we will demonstrate how the interplay between activity, the stiffness of external trapping potential, and inertia can lead to dynamic transitions between equilibrium-like and purely non-equilibrium distributions in the steady state. Additionally, in the dilute limit away from motility-induced phase separation, excluded volume interactions already lead to notable features, such as a decrease in the steady-state diffusivity and mobility of a tagged particle with increasing mass. These findings will be rationalized through kinetic theory arguments.
