Relativistic wavepackets and Klein tunneling for Klein-Gordon and Dirac particles

This talk will be about wavepacket dynamics in super-critical potentials for spin-0 bosons and spin-1/2 fermions. I will introduce a semi-analytical method based on multiple scattering expansions (MSE). We will see how the divergent character of the MSE naturally accounts for charge creation and the Klein paradox at the potential discontinuities. The MSE also solves the issue of negative tunneling times in barrier traversals, an issue that has in the past been attributed to the limitations of the first quantized formalism. We will also see how, somewhat surprisingly, Klein tunneling is suppressed for scalar bosons when a super-critical potential well’s depth increases. The wavepacket approach will be compared to results obtained from finite-difference solutions of the relativistic wave equations. Connections with time-dependent QFT approaches will be made. .
